Six-time world champion female boxer MC Mary Kom has been nominated for the Padma Vibhushan. She became the first female athlete to be nominated for the country’s second highest honor.

Mary Kom was awarded the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013.

Star shuttler PV Sindhu was nominated for the Padma Bhushan. According to sports ministry sources, apart from these two, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra and women’s T20 team captain Harmanpreet Kaur have been nominated for the Padma Shri award.

Mary Kom is the only boxer to have won the World Championship six times. She is also the first boxer to win medals at seven World Championships. The 36-year-old Mary Kom could become the fourth player to receive the Padma Vibhushan

Earlier, the award has been given to Chase player Viswanathan Anand (2007), cricketer Sachin Tendulkar (2008) and climber Sir Edmund Hillary (2008).

Sindhu won this world championship:

On the other hand, Sindhu won the gold medal at the BW World Championship this year. She became the first Indian to win the tournament. Sindhu, a 24-year-old shuttler from Hyderabad, was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015.

Apart from Vinesh, Manika and Harmanpreet, the names of women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal, former shooter Suma Shirur and mountaineer twin sisters Tashi and Nungshi Malika were also sent for the Padma Shri.

Archer Tarundeep Rai and Olympic-playing hockey player MP Ganesh were also nominated for the Padma Shri. The names of the award winners will be announced on the eve of Republic Day next year.
